In 1977, The Lifeguards took on very strenuous and demanding roles in Alan Osbourn's "Terraces", which ran at the Chapter Arts Centre, Cardiff, to critical acclaim.
In 1981, The Lifeguards derived their greatest pleasure and enjoyment by organising and performing in their first Old Time Music Hall and Variety Show at the Miners' Hall, Merthyr Tydfil, which proved to be so highly entertaining and popular to the capacity audiences that a further series was performed the following year. In 1983, they entered the BBC Radio Wales and Welsh Tourist Board Competition - "Year of the Castles". Their song, "Castles of Wales", written by Merthyr Tydfil born Ivor Bevan, was chosen third out of nearly 100 entries, and was judged by such celebrities as Owain Arwel Hughes and Max Boyce.
March 1985 saw The Lifeguards make their first commercial recording of popular songs.
In October 1985, they participated in a Gala Concert at St. David's Hall, Cardiff, in aid of the Commonwealth Games Appeal.
Christmas of the same year saw The Lifeguards raise £1200 in eight days by singing carols in local clubs and pubs. This money went towards a Baby Scanner Unit, much needed in a local hospital. This was but one of many donations to local, national and international charities and worthy causes. The Christmas collections rose to £1500 in 1999, when the money raised was donated to the Mayor's Appeal of that year, to MacMillan Nurses and Leukemia Research. And in 2000 the collections rose to a massive £2500, this time donated to the Stanley Thomas Children's Trust. We must not forget that it is the generosity of the people of Merthyr Tydfil and the surrounding areas which made these donations possible. Without their goodwill none of this would have happened.
